What is a 24k map, a 100k map, etc?
A 24k map is the most detailed standard map that the USGS has in the drg topographic series. It simply means that 1 inch
on the map equals 24,000 inches on the ground. A single map covers about a 7 mile by 9 mile area. The same for the 100k,
1 inch equals 100,000 inches. The 250k is the same, and is the least detailed map that covers the most area.
Why add lamination to a map?
Laminate-It... MapSport will add lamination to any map. A 1.6 mil film of UV resistant ultra-clear lamination will be hot bonded to both
sides of the map. This creates a map solution that is both highly water resistant and also very durable. The map can be folded, though
it will not take a crease set or it can be rolled. Another advantage, you can use marking pens to add notes, routes, etc that can later
be removed with warm water and a sponge or if using dry-erase with an eraser. Only $4 per map, select the Laminate-It
option from the each map description screen before adding to you shopping cart.
Do you accept Purchase Orders?
MapSport is happy to accept purchase orders from public or private schools, local, state and federal government agencies and qualified companies.
Please fax to 281-292-6447 or email a .pdf file to websales@mapsport.com.
I am in the military stationed overseas, how to I order?
First, thank-you for your service. Now to order, enter your rank and name as usual, the address post,
enter APO or FPO in the City field. Select Military AA, AE, or AP from the State pick list, then
enter the zip.
Example
First Name: SFC Jane
Last Name: Doe
Address: X / 123 XX XX
City: APO or FPO
State: Military XX
Zip: 09334
How do I find a topo?
Use the Index Viewer, select the state, then locate the area you are interested in, jot down the name(s) of the maps, then enter part or all of the
name into the "Search for a Map" box, press the magnifying glass button, then select your map. Or use the place name search to find a 24k topo;
searching by city, river, landmark, etc. and then link directly to a search for the map.
Are your topos exactly like the old USGS map I have?
The USGS prints from DEM files using an offset press yielding a high quality map that we are used to using.
MapSport prints from DRG scan files using wide format inkjet printers which also
yields a high quality map. However the map is only as good as the DRG scan which is done by the USGS and
depending on the map, you may see a little wave in the text.
Also as you might expect, the ink is somewhat different, ink-jet will smudge a bit more quickly than the offset press, though
under most conditions it works fine. One more note, our paper sizes will differ slightly from the USGS depending on the map.
Hey, for $6.95 and fast and free shipping, we have to print on demand, it would not be workable to stock
70,000+ maps like the USGS and print batch runs.

Where can I get a key to topographic map symbols?
Click Here ... This is a link to the USGS online symbols list.
Make sure you review all three pages.
Can I download a map and print it myself?
MapSport does not offer a download service, though several other sites do. If you print a map at less than it original size, even
on a high resolution inkjet or laser printer, you will not see all of the very detailed topographic features. The usgs topo series
are very detailed maps that show elevation lines, jeep trails, roads (partially), vegetation patterns, etc for a large block of land.
Our maps are printed high resolution, on 24in wide high quality paper and shows all of the details that are lost at smaller sizes (or resolutions). We can also do custom
printing of any size or combination of maps, email us at WebSales@mapsport.com
Are your maps waterproof?
No, the ink will smear if wet and the paper will become easy to tear. Everyone has their own idea on how to waterproof a map, you
can use commercial map sealers, though we have heard that Thompsons Water Seal works as well. You can try our lamination,
which makes the map 100% waterproof and more durable. Other methods are to use a 1 gallon ziploc and position the map(s)
each day to show the area I am hunting in. It is not a bad idea to keep a backup copy in your pack in case your primary map
gets wet, but we would say that since we sell em.
Are USGS Topo maps always accurate?
USGS Maps are drawn to a published accuracy standard, and personally I have found them to be very accurate. However, the disclaimer
is that when used for hiking or hunting they are only as good as we (emphasize we) users. You have to study them and the terrain, be able to properly use a compass
and if practiced, use a GPS to plot your postion on the topo since all GPS units will display latitude and longitude which
are scaled on the maps. One note, you should not depend on a print of a scanned DRG topo to provide accurate scaling, generally they are fairly close
along the latitude (east to west) lines, but will be less accurate along the latitude lines (south to north). And if all else fails, be able to
dead reckon a walkout by using the sun, stars and moon positions.
